Why is it considered taboo to question human rights?
Q. There is no evidence to support the claim that human life is ''valuable'', which human rights are, at least officially, based on. Why is it then generally considered taboo to question human rights, especially as valid foundations are absent?

A. Actually you're correct, there is no evidence that human rights tangibly exist. However the fact that they are recognized in a conviction of the heart is a great first step in the debate as to whether there are objective moral values or if morality is relative. I highly recommend reading "Natural Law; Reflections on theory and practice" by Jacques Maritain. Maritain was instrumental in the construction and implementation of the U.N. declaration of Human Rights. A Thomist philosopher that argued effectively the legitimacy of the existence of Natural Law. Essentially, it is in the nature of every human being with a properly informed and functioning conscience to rationally recognize and be drawn to choose good over evil moral acts. Human… [cont.]
