An engine is a mechanical device that produces some form of output from a given input. An engine whose purpose is to produce kinetic energy output from a fuel source is called a prime mover; alternatively, a motor is a device which produces kinetic energy from other forms of energy (such as electricity, a flow of hydraulic fluid or compressed air).

A motor car (automobile) has a starter motor and motors to drive pumps (fuel, power steering, etc) – but the power plant that propels the car is called an engine. The term 'motor' was originally used to distinguish the new internal combustion engine -powered vehicles from earlier vehicles powered by a steam engine (as in steam roller and motor roller).

Military engines included siege engines, large catapults, trebuchets and battering rams.

What exactly happens to a turbofan engine in the event of a birdstrike?
Q. What exactly happens to a turbofan engine in the event of a birdstrike? Will this consequent an engine failure? (For pilots: What is a immediate remedy to such a situation in a single-engined aircraft?) While I understand that most modern jet engines have stringent requirements to fulfill with regards to this issue and that new materials are emerging to counter this threat, are there further actions to counter this problem?

A. Just like any "accident" it has to do with many varibles. Small birds may be ingested on the ground or in flight and never be noticed, just like paper, trash, or small rocks. Big birds, or flocks of birds may get sucked in, and then it depends on engine RPM, altitude, density of bird mass, and of course where they travel thru the engine. Many high-bypass turbine engines have a large area on the outer circumfrence of the engine with only one set of fan turbine blades, then continue to an exhaust area. Birds may pass thru here easily with little or no damage. However, if they ingest near the center of an engine they may pass thru and into the compressor and combustor section of the engine and can do much damage. Damage that is only visible… [cont.]
